Letters from Their Excellencies
50th Year Celebration
We have just returned from the SCA 50th Year Celebration in Danville, Indiana. There were so many things happening! We will only write about a small part of them. It was a joy to see old friends and to meet new ones. Northshield and Avacal are lovely camp neighbors.
Of all the martial activities, the Outlands Cavalry far outshone the others. Caer Galen’s Equestrian Champion, Lord Miklos Kovacs, wore the tabard and his horse wore the barding of Caer Galen, looking sharp. They each excelled, some getting authorized in new forms and then competing. Special shout-out to Mauritz (sp?) for coming in third in the foam-tip jousting just days after getting authorized! Mistress Arabella (the Society Equestrian Marshal) and Master Terafan (the Equestrian Marshal for the event) both wanted to be on the Outlands’ Buzkashi team because the Outlands riders are so awesome. Oh! And we met Buttons the jousting mule.
We had the great honor of participating in the Opening Ceremonies, standing in for Their Majesties. Some of the SCA Founders spoke,
describing the first event. We are indebted to Lord Gauvain and Lady Petronella for quickly stepping in as Herald and Banner Bearer. The small but loud Outlands contingent in the stands made us smile.
The history museum was amazing. It was great to see the various places where the Outlands featured on the Bomticc Tapestry (see here:
http://carrotkhan.webs.com/). The Tapestry is huge in person.
As usual, Outlanders took care of each other. Our camp location (right by the entrance to one camp area) allowed us to spread our Outlandish hospitality to others by helping them to their campsites. Also, al-Barran introduced the Known World to a great game called Pitch Pot, playing on the village green to the wee hours of the morning. There were shenanigans involving a stuffed monkey and the accusation of stolen pork rinds. Mistress Ansteys was most instrumental in composing our response. If you want to know more of the story, come to the Bardic at Caer Galen Defender.
We enjoyed attending a couple of foreign courts and learning about the foreign customs from the society. I think the recurring lesson for us however was that wherever we go, there are people who wish they were from the Outlands. Though our numbers were small, shouts of “Outlands!” could be heard every evening from traveling bands of foreigners. Some of them were so eager to be outlandish that they were prompted with a 3 count before crying Outlands. It was very joyful.
Yours,
Anne & Matilda

Baronesses of Caer Galen
Siege at Inlandish
Greetings Caer Galen~
We are home, the car is unpacked and the first of several loads of laundry have been started. We had an amazing weekend at Inlandish! We thank the Barony of Caerthe for hosting this event and are grateful that the more extreme weather hit early and allowed for a very pleasant Sat, Sun and Mon.
THLord Konrad was recognized as a Builder of the Arch for his continued service to the Barony and Baroness Moyra was awarded a Chalice of St. William the Cooper for her work as Caer Galen’s Equestrian Champion over the past year. We were proud to have 2 riders compete in this year’s Champion Challenge. Lord Mikos Kovacs on Saga was victorious over Lady Gwen on Rowdy. We are excited to see him ride as our Champion at the SCA 50th Year event this June.
There was much hospitality and joy coming from the Caer Galen encampment. Warmth of fire, food and libations were shared. We welcomed newer folks to their first event as well as enjoying the company of old friends.
June 7th is Folkmoot! We hope to see all of you there.
Yours,
Anne & Matilda

Battlemoor VI
We are home safe from Battlemoor with lots of laundry and great memories. This post is long but we want to make sure to thank so many people for their service this weekend.
-We saw Lief Davidson elevated to Knighthood and Her Royal Highness, Crown Princess Anna elevated to a Pelican in very powerful ceremonies.
-Lord Konrad von Alpirsbach is the new Royal Archer of the Outlands! Umbertino also represented Caer Galen well, coming in second.
-Lord Vyncent was awarded a Silver Tyne by Their Majesties!
-The entire Barony was given an Award of the Hearthstead from King Tom of Northshield for our years of exceptional hospitality.
-Young Erasmus won his choice of axe to be made by the King during a raffle. It was quite a sight to see everyone’s joy at his entering court to claim his prize.
-The “Come As You Aren’t” party on Saturday was a HUGE hit. Lady Anabel did a great job of organizing the party and we should mention the following:
• The Bartenders were creative and kept the place hopping.
• The ID checkers were appropriately officious, especially His Honor, Baron Carrick.
• The addition of quesadillas, bacon, grilled salami and grilled cheese were a delight for everyone.
• The special appearance of the Turkish men who helped with bartending and cooking made for some fun times.
• House Vandal and their generosity of the Nostrovia table got the party started early!
• We are immensely grateful to the early rising clean up crew, most notably Lady Bree, Mistress Brigetta (of Drygestan) and Lord Miguel (who also stayed up all night helping).
• Finally, this party would not have been quite so well basted if not for the donated libations and food.
Thank you to everyone, including the Kingdom of Atenveldt.
-Young Alexandra performed a fantastic tuck and roll in the road that amazed all the adults who witnessed her trip.
-We were honored to have not 1 but 2 teams enter the Tournament of the Guard and display such acts of chivalry and grace on the field.
-We were surprised with a gift of new Baronial feast gear commissioned by Baron Andros and created by Mistress Mineko of Atenveldt.
-We gave the following awards and recognitions:
• Keridwen Andersdottir – Arch
• Cecilia Caterina da Firenze – Arch
• Massimiliano Pontieri dal Sasso - Cookie (his first one!)
• Zodrick – Bard Militant
• Padraig – inducted to the Veterani for his archery at Northern Realms War
•Jeanne Marie – provided with citizenship papers and created an Ambassador of Caer Galen, declaring:
“that all land, space, goods, beasts, and persons within three good paces’ reach in any direction from her heart shall be considered to be within the boundaries and demesne of Caer Galen.”
-Our camp was bigger and better than ever in no small part due to the hard work of THLady Matilda Beresford as land coordinator, Lady Mahara as food coordinator and EVERYONE else who helped us host guests and make them and visitors feel welcome.
-Special thanks to His Honor Baron Max who revived the fire pit and allowed our hospitality to shine and keep folks warm.
-Super special thanks to THLady Cecilia who organized scribes from the Northern Outlands allowing us to make a gift of 20 scroll blanks to Their Excellencies of Citadel. Both they and we were overwhelmed with the display of talent and generosity in these scrolls.
Caer Galen is truly a jewel in the crown of the Outlands and we are honored and grateful to be your baronesses.

St. Sebastian's
Thank you Hawks Hollow for another amazing St. Sebastian's event! So MUCH archery! It was fun to shoot alongside some great folks. I am definitely inspired to keep learning and get better and better.
Thanks to Konrad and Ella for representing Caer Galen on the range. HUGE thanks to Bree and Wade for taking care of me all day. I actually came home well-hydrated.
I look forward to shooting more often and taking to the range at Battlemoor.

Fall Crown Tournament
Wow, Caer Galen. Just Wow! What an amazing weekend. It was no small feat to host Crown Tournament and we are so proud of our Barony and all of the hard work that made this event great.
Mistress Signy and her team are to be commended including successful donation lunch coordinated by THL Jibra’il, a fabulous feast prepared by THL Shoshannah and her team, the list field rehab done by Sir Gareth, THL Hayashi and Rito.
The heat of the day was blistering but Their Majesties LOVED the site including a great field with beautiful view of the mountains and a perfect hall for hosting court and feast.
A miracle happened! Baron and Baroness Caer Galen, our beloved Max & Yaz, went to a local vendor, bought a few budget popsicles and tossed them into a cooler. When they returned to the tourney and opened the cooler, there were a multitude of popsicles, fudgesicles, Klondike bars and the like, enough to share with all (most? some?) who wanted them. Truly, Saint William the Cooper blessed us that day.
The following Caer Galenites were recognized throughout the weekend. Nerienda was given an AoA, Matilda Beresford was made a Companion of the Stag’s Heart and we saw Asta elevated to a Laurel in morning court. Our very own Bela Kos was the victor of the day and is now Heir to the Stag Throne, honoring his love and inspiration Anna who stands as Crown Princess. We look forward to their upcoming reign.
We awarded Lady Anabel with an Arch of Caer Galen for her stalwart service to the Barony. Thanks to the generosity of our populace, we were honored to have a bounty of largesse to present to Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses. In addition, the Bookbinders Guild presented gifts to Their Majesties, Their Royal Highnesses, the Crown Prince of Northshield and the visiting Baroness from Loch Salann.
We remain humbled with the munificence and diligence of Caer Galen. Thank you.

Here There Be Dragons
I had so much fun in Plattefordham this weekend that it’s taken me an extra day to write about it!
My friends there are still as hospitable and fun as ever. I’m so grateful to Lady Netasha and Lord Vlastimir for allowing me to stay at their home this weekend and to Baroness Keridwen and Lord Taver for making sure I was well attended.
My memories include the following moments:
- Meeting at least 6 people for whom this was their first event.
- Making new friends from Artemisia attending their first Outlands event and geeking out over the love of bardic.
- Spending all day at the Archery range and having some great conversations on and off the range. Thanks to everyone who gave me tips and helped find my buried arrows.
- Witnessing at least 12 youth archers try their hands at shooting and being in awe of the teaching and patience of Lord Ronin and Lord Thomas Marston as they made sure each one got their turn.
- Tasting the Battlemoor brewing entries of Lord Dubhghall. The man has brewed a hard cider… oh dear.
- Eating till I was near bursting at the feast. (there were too many amazing dishes to name here)
- Sharing in a magical moment around the bardic fire on Sat night where several children participated with such passion and bravery. I still get goosebumps remembering the whole crowd on the edge of our seats while the youngest McCarty regaled us with her story.
Thank you to Lord Artair and Katarina – you and your team pulled off another great event! Well done!

Monkey's Quest for the Unicorn Horn
As the sun sets on the remains of the Monkey's Quest for the Unicorn Horn, we are most pleased with the memories created today. Baroness Katherina did a wonderful job of autocratting this fine event, and we are grateful to her for her efforts.
Those running stations were diligent and were the arbiters of much merriment. I especially like the bubble tourney, where, with my trusty steed, we slayed many bubbles. And, from Mistress Signy’s table, one young soul made Anne a present of the bracelet he made.
Puppet court was probably the silliest thing we’ve been a part of and a wonder to behold. Thank you to Mistress Yaz who crafted our puppets; Baroness Morgan who’s mastery of Harold the Monster Herald made the day; Lady Anabel who hand embroidered the very first Hedgehog patch we awarded and Lady Vanozza for being the “hands” of the herald.
During court we recognized Sir Michelangelo as a Companion of the Golden Nightingale, THLady Shoshanah was made a Twice Bearer of the Chalice of St. William the Cooper and Auryn was made an Urchin of Caer Galen (Hedgehog). Young Sophia and Erasmus were made the Keepers of the Unicorn Horn for their impressive acts throughout
Thank you everyone for making today so joyful!

Highlands Rapier Camp
We have just returned from Highlands Rapier Camp! The Shire of Aarquelle are amazing hosts, the site was lovely and there was a huge amount of rapier classes and fighting to be enjoyed!
Caer Galen never ceases to amaze us. Don Tom and Mistress Briatiz both taught classes at the event, sharing their knowledge in rapier strategy and balance. Their Royal Majesties also saw fit to award Lady Bree Pye with a Stag’s Heart for her continued service to the kingdom and they offered Baroness Asta admittance into the Order of the Laurel!
It gladdened our hearts to see so many of our friends from Aarquelle acknowledged with awards this weekend by Their Royal Majesties. This is a hard-working shire and their joy is infectious.
Lady Mahara has volunteered to coordinate a food plan for Caer Galen’s camp at Battlemoor this year. She will be press-ganging contacting folks soon to sign up for meals. And don’t forget that Lady Anabel is organizing the Queen’s Party on Saturday night at Battlemoor. Look to these pages for more information soon.

Northern Realms War
What a weekend! The Shires of Plattefordham and Noiregarde did a great job of running Northern Realms War. There was fighting, feasting, revelry and tales of shenanigans that will stay in our minds forever (somethings cannot be unseen).
These Caer Galenites were recognized by King Tam with awards: Jeanne Marie and Ketill both were made Defenders of the Stags Blood and Finn was made an Argent Hart!
Caer Galen was well represented this weekend and we appreciate those folks who assisted us and made sure we were well attended, including Taver, Finn, Keridwen, Jeanne-Marie, Ketill and Miguel. Special thanks to Padraig who loaned Anne archery gear so she could shoot on Saturday as well as representing the Outlands himself on Friday and Saturday on the range. Even from afar: Cecilia Wrenne made and sent hoods for TRM of Northshield that were beautiful and well received. We also owe thanks to Felix, Dagorix and Zachariah from Unser Hafen as well as Quentin, Rowland, Kendrick and the other al-Barranians who share their hospitality.
We would be remiss if we did not also report the sad news of treachery from this event. Benito il’Nero of Northshield did commit such heinous acts that we were compelled to give testimony against him. We can report that the King of Northshield heard our statements and took swift action, delivering justice in the form of execution by the hands of his Champion. The charges that were brought against this co-autocrat are as follows:
1. Conspiring to start a war.
2. False accusations.
3. Theft of property without a letter of marque.
4. Forgery, by sending us missives in the name of Plattfordham.
5. Inefficient cattle-raiding
6. Eating meat during lent
7. Conspiring to have our tent placed, without our knowledge, on flat ground next to a burbling brook.
8. General vexation and confoundment.
Let that be a lesson to all of you about such things that are not to be tolerated in Northshield.
Next week, Highlands Rapier Camp! We hope to see many of you there!

Enduro
Enduro was a wonderful event! The Dumas Quest was full of difficult puzzles, witty banter, feats of strength and skill! Then there was an exorbitant amount of power-lounging, camaraderie and food. During court, we made Don Thomas Vandale a Builder of the Arch. We’d like to offer special thanks to Lady Vanozza da Corbetta for heralding our court.
In the evening, Lord Rowland Grey of Lincolnshire hosted the northern Windhover Bard regional competition, and many songs and stories and much revelry was shared around the fire. Our mysterious Saracen benefactor made a brief (but mysterious) appearance, gifting all (of age and inclination) with the cutest miniature bottles.
Thank you, Don Thomas, your hard-working crew, and everyone who attended. It was lovely.

Inlandish: Battle of the Five Armies
Inlandish: Battle of the Five Armies was a wonderful event! There were so many wonderful things, both big and small, that we can’t possibly tell you all of them. Camaraderie, friendly rivalry with the other Baronies, stories around the fire pit, epic tournaments, mysterious Saracens, new champions, songs sung, friendships made and strengthened, old friendships rekindled, and other stuff.
Thanks go to the canton of Hawk’s Hollow for running the event. THL Yukihana was a great autocrat and the feast was yummy. We heard that many adroit Caer Galenites made the site tokens, lampworked beads.
Awards given at Sunday’s court:
Lady Jehennette van Mynden was made a Companion of the Golden Nightingale
Lady Anabel la clergesse was given a Chalice of St. William the Cooper for being the one with jumper cables, the cinnamon rolls and sometimes the sanity.
Nerianda was given a Chalice of St. William the Cooper for jumping in and helping whenever and wherever at the event and mostly, in the rain.
Lord Eric Lightfoot of Studley, Lord Timothy MacGregor and Valter of Plattfordham were all given Chalices of St. William the Cooper for helping countless cars get unstuck over the course of the weekend.
(Given on behalf of Their Majesties, King Tam & Queen Kathryn) Lord Konrad von Alpirsbach was made a Companion of the Golden Pheon
New champions!
Lieutenant of the Guard: Lord Eric Lightfoot of Studley
Defender: Douglas Stone
Archery Champion: Ella White
Equestrian Champion: Baroness Moyra MacColla
The outgoing Defender, Master Grellan, made a lovely tabard for future Defenders to wear. He has our gratitude.
THL Matilda was a most accommodating Camp Coordinator. We appreciated her foresight in reserving extra space for those who hadn’t contacted her beforehand.
Friday: Helgaball! Epic parties around the list field! Thank you, Lord Padraig and Lady Laura for providing exceptional hospitality! The mojitos are still being praised. Thanks, Nerianda for the yummy sangria, too.
Saturday: Archery competition! And Mysterious Saracens, presenting us with the original Chalice of St. William the Cooper, made by his own hand! And the heavy weapons tourney! And the feast!
Sunday: Rapier! Equestrian! Tornadoes with guns, trying to kill us all! Court!
We continued to be amazed by Caer Galen. Thank you for making us the proudest Baronesses in the Known World!

We continued to be amazed by Caer Galen. Thank you for making us the proudest Baronesses in the Known World!

Baronesses of Caer Galen
Spring Coronation - Tam and Kathryn
Hello~
Caer Galen was well represented at Coronation, in a variety of ways this past weekend.
• Master Carrick’s heralding of the peerage ceremonies and final court of Hrothgar and Ingridr and the Coronation ceremony was clear and precise in a very crowded hall.
• Baroness Katherina attended the Baron and Baroness of Citadel of the Southern Pass, and was highly praised for it.
• Baroness Asta created numerous scrolls that were the cause of many oohs and ahhs.
• The collars for the Order of Defence were presented to the Crown by Baroness Matilda, Mistress Signy and Baroness Anne.
• Duchess Anna was offered admittance into the Order of the Pelican!
• Lord Finn acquitting himself well as a Queen’s Guard (including smiling like a maniac over the body of the dead king)
• Dona Tatiana may have discovered the source of infinite monkeys!
• We were well attended throughout the weekend by Lady Anabel, Lady Gillian, THLady Matilda B, Lady Jehennette, Lord Eric, Master Grellan, and Narienda.
• Caer Galen took to the tourney field and vied for all three positions of honor on Sunday. Lord Jordan, Lord Tim, Sir Michaelangelo, Lady Jehennette, Lord Eric and Lord Zodrick competed in the Protector of the Queen’s Heart tournament. Baroness Keridwen and Lord Lief competed in the Queen’s Champion tournament. Don Tom and Lord Tim competed in the Defender of the Queen tournament. We were so proud to see each of these fighters comport themselves with grace and honor.
• Lord Zodrick was called out by King Tam for his skill during the tournament (including crossing blades with His Majesty for the bye fight) and was awarded a Silver Tyne!
• Lord Lief Daleson was offered admittance into the Order of Chivalry!
• We were also personally recognized and very honored as Matilda received King Hrothgar’s Cordon Royal and Anne was named as a Walker of the Way!
The autocrat, Baroness Morgan and her staff did a great job hosting this event and making it fun in spite of the weather. We look forward to this summer reign of King Tam and Queen Kathryn and all of the local events Caer Galen will be hosting.
Thank you Caer Galen for making us proud!

Heralds and Scribes
Heralds and Scribes this past Saturday was a fantastic event!
Ray de Soliel Pursuivant (THL Shoshanah) proved that being a herald sometimes risks life and limb. In spite of this she persevered to read seven amended award charters in court. She even turned a profit, allowing payment to be made to have someone hear the charter being read to them in a very loud and directed manner. $96 was raised for the regalia fund!
There were a number of great classes, both heraldic and scribal. Also, the scribal display organized by Master Jethro was fantastic.
Lady Kathleen sold decals for us, often roughing up people in dark corners for their two dollars. We are grateful to her for her diligence.
We were well attended by Mistress Yazida, THLady Matilda, Don~a Tatiana and Lady Anabel. The event steward (Lady Killian) and her assistants (Lady Aldytha and Lady Elinor Rose) were most gracious.
White Stag will doubtless publish a list of heraldic promotions, so keep an eye out for it. There are a number of Caer Galenites recognized.

Kingdom A&S
I had a great weekend at Kingdom A&S Collegium hosted by Fontaine dans Sable. The trip was made easier for the company of Duchess Anna, Mistress Mirabel, Lord Soren of Fontaine, Don Estevan and THLady Emily (congrats on your well-deserved Stag!)
There were a LOT of classes. I personally got to make a bone needle in THLord Carloman's class and Sir AElric made it possible for me to try my hand making a silver viking ring.
I was able to witness many fine people receive recognition in Their Majesties' court, including the offer of Peerage to what will be the first 2 members of the Order of Defense in the Outlands. Huzzah to Don Govanen and Don Domin, Baron of Caerthe. I look forward to bearing witness to this moment in history being made.
After such a weekend it is good to be home in Caer Galen, where I'm certain that I'm the luckiest Baroness in all the Known World.

Anne
